Water Supply

Out of 623 towns of the State only 55 towns have partial sewerage facility and out of 51 towns having population more than 1 lac as per 2001 census, 14 towns still do not have sewerage system at all. Sewage treatment plants in 15 important towns located along rivers Ganga, Yamuna & Gomti have been constructed under Ganga Action Plan launched in the year 1985, details of which are given below:

Some additional sewerage works with in the radius of 5 Kms. of Taj Mahal are under construction at Agra town under Taj Trapezium Zone Program. During financial year 2005-06 a provision of Rs. 123.20 crores was made in the state budget for sewerage facilities in Varanasi, Rampur, Kanauuj, Ballia, Banda, Azamgarh, Kanpur, Etwah, Pratapgarh, Mainpuri, Gunnaur, Gawan and Babrala towns. Such whopping provision has been made for the first time ever.

To combat the environmental degradation and health hazards following salient measures are proposed in the sewerage sector during the Tenth Five year Plan Period.

  • Rehabilitation and strengthening of sewerage systems in 55 towns
  • Introduction of sewerage system in remaining towns having population (Year 2001) of more than 1lakh
